The Weather Channel to Name Winter Storms

Starting this Winter the Weather Channel will begin naming noteworthy winter storms according to a press release on their site.  The reason they state they are doing this is it will allow them to better communicate the threat and timing of the storm.  My thoughts are its an attempt at a ratings boost after a very slow severe weather season this year which likely effected The Weather Channel’s bottom line.  The following statement in The Weather Channel’s press release is a bit scary however.

This is where a world-class organization such as The Weather Channel will play a significant role. We have the meteorological ability, support and technology to provide the same level of reporting for winter storms that we have done for years with tropical weather systems.

The Weather Channel has consistently over hyped tropical weather systems and minor severe weather outbreaks in an attempt to keep people glued to their television channel to increase ratings.  Doing this with winter weather systems is nothing new to them either, but naming the winter weather systems is.
